This might be the most challenging massage for both the patient and the therapist. Communication is important. Listening to and watching the responses that the body is saying as well as the clients own voice.
I tell every new client that, "This is your massage. You are in control. Wherever you go, what ever table you are on, you are the one that is in charge. If, when we are working there is pain that is intolerable or is taking your breath away, that work will not be helpful to the recovery process. You must breathe that deeper breath that goes past your lungs into your abdomen and beyond. An easy slow inhale and exhale. Holding your breath will hold the tension in the muscles. Breathing a relaxed calming breath sends a message that every thing is ok now and you want that muscle contraction to let go now. And yes there will be some pain. A wise older person told me once, "It got in there with pain. To get it out there has to be some pain."
How the muscle tension did get in there can come from a multitude of happenings. Trauma from a motor vehicle accident. Slip and fall or slip and catch. Slept funny. Overworked while doing the renovations. Tackled hard during a game. Fell down the ski hill or got run over by a snowboarder on the ski hill. Raked leaves. Drove the truck for harvest. Shovelled snow. Sat all day finishing a project and now it hurts right here in the shoulder and butt. This is a chronic health issue like arthritis, scoliosis, headaches, fibromyalgia, frozen shoulder, stroke or cardiac surgery, MS, high blood pressure and lower back pain.
The massage techniques will be a combination of gentle and deep manipulations. The focus will be on the problem and the compensating problem and the supporting muscle structures that balance the problem. The idea is to assist you in getting your body balance back. That includes you doing homework to reduce inflammation, stretch, strengthen, and rest or exercise, to gain back your full mobility. Combining massage with other therapies like physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, and whatever else you have thought of and would like to try, all efforts will help you to get back to normal faster.
Wishing you peace and wellness.
